Hey Mike Whatley: Guilt by Association Equals Guilt
Harvey West Jr. was charged in 1999 with the statutory rape of three girls — two of them fourteen, one sixteen. He pleaded down to taking indecent liberties with a child, served six years, and has been on North Carolina's sex offender registry ever since. While you ran the state Republican Party, he was seated on the committee that writes that party's rules — in 2021, and again in 2024. Your own Plan of Organization says the chairman appoints every member of that committee. You were the chairman both times.

Spotlight Dispatch, generated August 5, 2026. Every chair at the table is pushed in but two. Nothing on the walls, nobody in the room, and no way to tell from here who pulled them out.
Mike, you are running for the United States Senate. Somewhere in the files behind you is a man named Harvey West Jr., and while you ran the North Carolina Republican Party he was seated on the committee that writes that party's rules. Not once. Twice.
In June you told a reporter you did not appoint him. So I read your own party's Plan of Organization. It says the chairman appoints every member of that committee. You were the chairman in 2021 and you were the chairman in 2024. West says you put him there both times.
Your party has never once said he was wrong.
Four months of reporters asking, and the most it has ever offered is that he kept doing what he was already doing.
There is a two-and-a-quarter-million-dollar ad running in your state on this right now and a poll showing you down nine, and you have still not answered the only question anybody is actually asking.
You should know who is writing, because it is the only thing that makes this worth opening. This paper takes no one's check — no paywall, no email captured, no data sold, no investors, no PAC, no federal money. Influence is not for sale here. I am not a North Carolina voter, I am not working for Roy Cooper, and nobody bought a word of this. I would print the identical letter with the parties reversed, and I did print one four days ago about a Democrat under indictment. My name and my number sit at the top of this page. Yours is on a ballot. One of us has answered questions this year.
I am not going to spend your time re-telling other people's reporting. You know the facts better than any reporter does. So here is the whole thing on one line instead.

Now the careful part, and then the blunt one. Nobody has produced a document with your name on it proving what you knew and when you knew it, and I am not going to pretend otherwise on my own page. Here is where that leaves me.
· WHAT I DO NOT BELIEVE ·
— I do not believe a man serves six years and comes home to county politics without a single person knowing why he was gone. — I do not believe a newspaper printed his record in 2012, and he surrendered a convention seat over it, and seven years later the incoming state chairman had somehow never heard. — I do not believe a name sits on a public sex offender registry, searchable in about nine seconds, and nobody vetting the party's own rules committee ever typed it in. — I do not believe you seat a man on that committee twice, three years apart, without knowing exactly who he is. — And I do not believe you would have opposed him at the start, the way he says you did, if you did not already know precisely what you were opposing.
On top of every bit of the above — the rules say you had to appoint him. Not that you might have. Not that somebody else in the building did it and you found out later. Yours was the only signature that could put him on that committee, and it went on twice.
You, sir, are guilty by association until you can explain how this pedophile was appointed not once, but twice, under your watch.
