Who are these “communists” Trump keeps warning us about?
A short, plain explainer — no adjectives. Two paragraphs on why the Democratic Socialists of America are suddenly everywhere and why the President keeps calling them communists, and then ten things about them that are simply, checkably true.

For about a month now, three words have been running on a loop through American politics: Democratic Socialists of America. Ever since a slate of DSA-backed candidates swept a set of Democratic primaries in June — unseating long-time incumbents in New York and Colorado, on top of Zohran Mamdani already sitting in the mayor's office in New York City — the group has been on the front page, in the President's feed, and on cable news every single night.
And the President has had exactly one word for all of it: communist. Godless communists. A cancer. The greatest threat to the country since its founding. He said it at Mount Rushmore, at the Faith and Freedom Coalition, on Truth Social in a four-hundred-word rant that read like a McCarthy-era blacklist. The trouble is that the word he keeps using and the thing he is pointing at are not the same thing. So, plainly, with no adjectives — here is what the Democratic Socialists actually are.

1. The entire group the President keeps telling you to fear — “the greatest threat since our founding” — is about 120,000 people nationwide, slightly fewer than the population of Fargo, North Dakota. And it is not even a political party: the Democratic Socialists of America is a membership organization, founded in 1982, whose candidates run and govern as Democrats. 2. Democratic socialism is not communism. It takes power by winning elections, and it has to stand for re-election — if voters hate the agenda, they vote it out. 3. It does not abolish private property or private business. It taxes them, regulates them, and builds public things beside them — housing, child care, transit. Communism seizes the factories and farms outright. 4. Its real-world models are Denmark, Norway, and Finland — capitalist democracies with deep safety nets — not the Soviet Union or Mao's China. 5. Most Americans already live with “socialism” by this definition, and like it: Social Security, Medicare, public schools, libraries, fire departments, the interstate highways. 6. Its agenda is mostly about the cost of living: Medicare for All, housing people can afford, a living wage, union rights, tuition-free college, a Green New Deal. 7. It is, even so, the largest socialist organization in American history — grown by its own count from roughly 6,000 members before Bernie Sanders' 2016 campaign to its current size, more than doubling since late 2024, when Mamdani launched his mayoral run. 8. Its best-known members won ordinary elections: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rep. Rashida Tlaib. 9. They are in the news because they keep winning Democratic primaries — in June 2026, DSA-backed candidates unseated long-time incumbents in New York and Colorado. 10. “Communist” is the label, not the fact. As the Washington Post put it plainly: Democrats are electing socialists; Republicans are labeling them communist.
You can be against every one of those ten things. That is allowed, and it is exactly what elections are for. But they are the record — and “communist” is not on the list.
